Mammoth is the administrative home of the park. It was the first entrance back in the late 1880's and the home to Fort Yellowstone. Fort Yellowstone housed a US Calvary Unit which ran the Park from the late 1800s early 1900s.... Mammoth is home to a series of hot springs which feed in to the Gardiner river where we went for a soak in hot spring water... the Rangers don't recommend doing this because of parasites that can lead to legionnaires disease and other deadly microbes, but we went in twice and came out OK. but because of the high risks involved they don't mark the swimming area, its only marked by a sign that says, "You are at the 45 parallel, half way to the North Pole" this also happens to be the border between Montana and Wyoming...
